Factual Information

The Abiquiu Volunteer Fire Department has its fire station in the village of Abiquiu, and a sub-station in Medanales. Our district stretches across an area of about 2,500 square miles; however, a substantial portion of this is forest land. The actual region we're responsible for covers about 980 square miles.

Highway 84 forms the main north-south artery, running from Espanola through Abiquiu to Chama and on to Colorado. In the north, our district reaches beyond Ghost Ranch and includes the Christ-In-the-Desert Monastery. West, it goes up Hwy 96 to about halfways to Coyote; in the east, it follows Hwy 554 about 6 miles toward El Rito, and in the south it goes to Rio del Oso. Besides those mentioned, the area includes the municipalities of Cañones, Chilí, Tierra Azul, and Santa California.

Before EMS (Emergency Medical Services) were added, our station dealt with about 10 - 12 fires a year, about 90% of them grass fires. Since then, our volunteers respond to between 90 to 120 calls a year. Medical emergencies and motor vehicle accidents comprise the majority of these calls.
